The Bull Terrier dates back to around 1835 and was probably created by mating a bulldog with the now extinct English White Terrier. These dogs were later crossed with Spanish pointers to increase their size.

In the 1860s, bulldog and terrier breeders, in particular a man named James Hinks, began to create a white dog. These animals became fashionable companions for gentlemen and were nicknamed the "White Cavalier" because of their bravery in the dogfighting ring and their courtesy to humans.

The first American Kennel Club (AKC) registered Bull Terrier was Nellie II in 1885. Twelve years later, in 1897, the Bull Terrier Club of America was founded. The Bull Terrier was made a separate variety in 1936, and the Dwarf Bull Terrier became a separate breed in 1992.

Well-known Bull Terrier fans include General George S. Patton, whose white Bull Terrier Willie followed him everywhere; actress Dolores Del Rio; author John Steinbeck; and President Woodrow Wilson. A well-known Bull Terrier is Patsy Ann, who greeted every ship that landed in Juneau, Alaska in the 1930s.
