Cane Corso (Corso for short) is a dog breed suitable for a person who wants to have a companion who can give them the love they need. He is a family dog. Don't expect him to befriend everyone he meets: he has no interest in people or other animals outside his family, but those in his family will have his unconditional loyalty and protection.

Give this dog something to do. He doesn't want to lie around all day and will find his own 'work' to do if you don't give it to him: usually jumping the fence and barking at passers-by, digging holes all the way to China or chewing your furniture. If you have a farm, it will help you with the animals.

Corso is one of the Mastiff type dogs. It was developed in Italy and is said to be descended from Roman war dogs. He has evolved less than his cousin, the Neapolitan Mastiff, and was bred to hunt, guard property and be a farm hand.

The word "cane", of course, is Latin for dog and derives from the word "canis". The word "corso" may come from "cohors", meaning bodyguard, or from "corsus", an old Italian word meaning robust.

The breed decimated as farming became more mechanized and neared extinction, but since the 1970s, dog breeders have been working to rebuild the Corso. The Cane Corso Amateur Society was founded in 1983, and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognized the breed in 1996.

A man named Michael Sottile imported the first Corso dog to the United States in 1988, followed by a second in 1989. The International Cane Corso Association was founded in 1993. The breed was finally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2010. The breed is currently governed by the Cane Corso Association of America.

Corso is very smart. Combine that with his bossy nature and it's easy to see how he could come to dominate the household. He will test you to see how far he can go. Institute a 'nothing in life is free' policy by asking him to do a command such as 'sit' or 'lie down' before rewarding him with a meal or toy.

Firm leadership does not mean hitting the dog. This not only sends the wrong message, but can also be dangerous with a big, strong dog. Corso understands the tone of voice and responds well to praise and rewards when he's done something you like, as well as quick corrections and consistent enforcement of rules when you don't like what he's doing. By being calm, you'll have much more to gain with this dog than when you're angry. Consistency will allow him to relax and know that you're in charge.

Help young Corso develop confidence by letting him spend some time alone. Like any dog, Corso needs early socialization, exposure to lots of people, sights, sounds and experiences, ideally before he's four months old. Socialization helps make sure he grows up to be a good dog, unafraid of strangers, children, other animals or if left alone when necessary. Without much experience of the world, he can easily become fearful or aggressive. The more he socializes, the better you'll be able to determine his normal behavior and what actions will require him to respond in a protective way.

According to the Italian breed standard, Corso should be indifferent when approached and should only react when there is a real threat. The Corso is a working breed and is forced to perform under high stress.
