No wonder the Golden Retriever is one of the top ten most popular dogs in the US and Europe. All is well with this dog: it is highly intelligent, sociable, beautiful and loyal. It's also full of life.

Golden Retrievers are slow to mature and retain the silly, playful personality of a puppy, which can be both delightful and annoying.

Originally bred for the physically demanding job of retrieving ducks and other birds for hunters, this dog needs daily exercise: a walk, free time in the yard, a run on the beach or lake. And like other intelligent breeds that have been bred to work, it needs to have a job to do. A tired Golden Retriever is a well-behaved Golden Retriever.

For many years, there was a legend that Golden Retrievers were descended from Russian shepherd dogs bought from a circus. The breed was actually developed in Scotland on the estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks, later known as Lord Tweedmouth.

Tweedmouth, like many noblemen of his day, bred animals of all kinds, trying to perfect different breeds. Tweedmouth's breeding records from 1835 to 1890 show what Golden was after: a talented retriever. He also wanted the dog to be loyal and temperate in the home.

Not surprisingly, the Tweedmouth breed first attracted attention for their hunting abilities. One of the best known was Don of Gerwyn, a descendant of Tweedmouth's dogs, who won a competition in 1904.

The Ken Kennel Club of England officially recognized the Golden Retriever as a distinct breed in 1911. At that time, they were classified as "Retriever - Yellow or Golden". In 1920, the breed name was officially changed to Golden Retriever.

The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1932. Today, the Golden Retriever is the second most popular breed in the US.

Males are 58 to 61 centimeters tall and weigh between 29 and 34 kilograms. Females are generally between 55 and 57 centimeters and 25 to 29 kilograms. Golden Retrievers usually reach their maximum height at one year of age and their maximum weight at two years of age.

Golden Retrievers are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they are prone to certain health conditions. Not all dogs will have any of these diseases, but it is important to be aware of them if you are considering this breed.

If you are buying a puppy, find a good breeder who will show you the health records of the puppy's parents. Health certificates prove that a dog has been tested and recovered from a specific condition.

• Hip dysplasia: This occurs quite frequently in Golden Retrievers. Many factors, including genetics, environment and diet, are thought to contribute to this hip joint deformity. Some dogs affected by this problem may be able to lead a normal, healthy life, but some may require surgery to move around easily.
• Elbow dysplasia: similar to hip dysplasia, it is also a degenerative disease. It is thought to be caused by abnormal growth and development, resulting in a malformed and weak joint. The disease varies in severity: the dog could develop arthritis or become lame. Treatment includes surgery, weight control, medical management and anti-inflammatory drugs.
• Cataracts: As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the lens of the eye that can grow over time. They can develop at any age and often do not affect vision, although some cases cause severe vision loss. Usually cataracts can be surgically removed with good results.
• Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). This is a degenerative eye disorder that eventually causes blindness due to the loss of photoreceptors in the back of the eye. • Subvalvular aortic stenosis: This heart problem is caused by a tight connection between the left ventricle (outflow) and the aorta. It can cause fainting and even sudden death. Your veterinarian can detect it and prescribe appropriate treatment.
• Osteochondritis dissecans : This orthopedic condition, caused by improper growth of cartilage in the joints, usually occurs in the elbows, but has also been seen in the shoulders. It causes painful stiffening of the joint, to the point where the dog is unable to bend its elbow. It can be detected in dogs as young as four to nine months of age. Overfeeding or using high protein foods can contribute to the development of this condition.
• Allergies: Allergies are a common problem in dogs. There are three main types of allergies: food-based allergies, which are treated by a process of eliminating certain foods from the dog's diet; contact allergies, caused by a reaction to a topical substance such as bedding, flea powders, dog shampoos and other chemicals and treated by eliminating the cause of the allergy; and inhalant allergies, caused by airborne allergens such as pollen, dust and mold. Medications for inhalant allergies depend on the severity of the allergy. It is important to note that ear infections often accompany inhalant allergies.
• Von Willebrand's disease: This is a blood disorder that can be found in both humans and dogs. It affects the clotting process due to reduced von Willebrand factor in the blood. A dog affected by von Willebrand's disease will have signs such as nose bleeding, bleeding gums, prolonged bleeding from surgery, and prolonged bleeding during heat cycles or after breastfeeding. Sometimes blood is found in stool. This condition is usually diagnosed in dogs between 3 and 5 years of age and cannot be cured. However, treatments including cauterization or suturing of lesions, von Willebrand factor transfusions before surgery, and avoidance of certain medications may be given.
• Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes periodic seizures. The veterinarian will need to know how severe the seizures are and how often they occur to determine which medications to prescribe.
• Hypothyroidism: this is a disorder of the thyroid gland that is thought to cause conditions such as epilepsy, hair loss, obesity, lethargy, dark spots on the skin and other skin conditions. It is treated with medication and diet.
• Hemangiosarcoma: This is a very dangerous form of cancer that originates in the lining of blood vessels and the spleen. It most commonly occurs in middle-aged and elderly dogs.
• Osteosarcoma: Osteosarcoma is a malignant bone cancer, common in large and giant breeds.

Golden Retrievers are built for action. If you love hiking or jogging, your Golden will be happy to join you. You'll need to take special care if you breed a Golden Retriever. These dogs grow very quickly between four and seven months of age, making them susceptible to bone disorders. Don't let your puppy run and play on very hard surfaces such as pavement until at least two years of age and until its joints are fully formed. Normal play on grass is fine.

Recommended daily amount: 2 to 3 cups of high-quality dry food per day, divided into two meals. Note: How much an adult dog eats depends on size, age, build, metabolism and activity level. The gentle Golden Retriever is not bothered by the noise and bustle of children, in fact, he thrives in these conditions. It is however a large, powerful dog, and can easily injure a small child by mistake.
