To be sure, Timmy and Lassie's adventures are fun to watch. But they are fiction - aren't they?

Well, according to those who know and love the Collie breed, the fictional accounts of the "Lassie" series are not too far from the truth. The real-life Collie is a highly intelligent, sensitive dog who is known for his unspoken ability to know when something is wrong. True stories abound about this breed coming to the rescue of people and animals.

The Collie is a medium-sized dog (22 to 32 pounds), easy to train, devoted and protective of his family, and friendly with people outside the family circle. Known for being playful and gentle, it is an excellent companion for children.

Although the Collie is good-natured and friendly, he can be suspicious of strangers, especially if he approaches children in his family. He is a good watchdog, will bark, but is not aggressive.

The beautiful Collie has two distinct looks: full coat (known as the Rough variety) and short coat (known as the Smooth variety). The television star was a Rough Collie.

Today, the Collie is more likely to be a pampered pet than a farm dog. He adapts well to a variety of home environments, as long as he gets plenty of daily exercise. He enjoys relaxing around the house with the family, as well as running and playing outside with the kids. The Collie is native to Scotland, mainly the Highland regions. He has been called Collis, Collie, Colley, Coally and Coaly, a name probably derived from col or coll, the Anglo-Saxon word for black. Some historians believe, however, that the name comes from collie, the black-faced Scottish sheep that the Collie dog guarded.

The original Collies were closer in size and shape to today's Border Collies and were predominantly black. Guarding ability was more important than looks, so the dogs varied greatly in this respect.

Stone Age nomads brought dogs to what is now southern England, and out of these came a hardy and intelligent dog, used with sheep, cattle, goats and pigs. Some historians say that the Collie's special ancestors were brought to the British Isles by Roman conquerors about two thousand years ago.

Queen Victoria is credited with saving them from obscurity. In 1860, she visited the estate in Scotland and fell in love with the good looks and gentle temperament of the collie dogs she saw. He brought some back to England.

It was not long before dogs were shown and bred for looks rather than working ability. They were first exhibited in 1860 at a dog show in Birmingham, England, in the generic class known as Scotch Sheep-Dogs.

A collie named Old Cockie, who was born in 1867, is credited with the characteristic type of the Rough Collie known today and is believed to be responsible for introducing the sable color to the breed.

In 1879, the first Collie was imported into the United States. The Collie Club of America was formed on August 26, 1886, making it one of the oldest canine specialty clubs.

• Eye abnormality: This inherited condition can sometimes lead to blindness. The condition causes changes and abnormalities in the eye. These changes can include choroid hypoplasia, an abnormal development of the choroid; coloboma, a defect of the optic disk; staphyloma, a thinning of the sclera; and retinal detachment. The eye abnormality usually appears by the time the dog is two years old. There is no treatment for the condition.
• Progressive retinal atrophy: This is a family of eye diseases involving gradual damage to the retina. At the beginning of the disease, dogs suffer from night blindness. As the disease progresses, they also lose their vision during the day. Many dogs adapt well to limited or complete vision loss, as long as their surroundings remain the same.
• Histiocytoma fibrosus (NGE): this condition is considered an immune disorder. It eventually causes damage to the cornea. Many Collies also have NGE. Treatment includes anti-inflammatory and/or immunosuppressive drugs.
• Hip dysplasia: This is an inherited condition in which the thigh does not fit snugly into the hip joint.
